Freelance Writer Jobs at Break Studios - Upfront Pay!

Sunday, March 7, 2010

Break studios is currently hiring freelance writers to write for their various internet properties for upfront pay. This won't be the right gig for everyone, but the pay isn't terrible and the site appears legit. I don't write for this company, so I'll give you all the information I have and let you make your own decision. I also welcome any comments from writers who have experience with Break Studios. Now, let's get to the good part.

What is Break Studios?

Break studios is similar to Demand Studios, as they have several different websites that require content and they hire writers to create for them. They aren't as big as DS and they don't pay as much, but they claim to provide regular work for their writers. Here's an excerpt from the website:

We provide our writers with dozens of article topics everyday. Each topic that matches your areas of expertise you listed on your application will show up on your homepage whenever you login....

Some of the sites you'll be writing for if you're hired by the company include Break.com, Chikipedia.com, Mademan.com and ScreenJunkies.com. The types of titles available, I've heard, are mostly pop-culture, movies, celebrities, etc., although I haven't seen them personally. I've heard that some of the topics may be offensive to some writers, (How to Get Your Girlfriend to Kiss Another Girl), but if this type of thing doesn't bother you, or if this is your area of expertise, Break Studios might be a good choice for you.

How Much Does Break Studios Pay?

This information is not listed on the website before you apply, but I have heard from several writers that the articles pay $8.00 each upfront. Considering the subject matter, I don't think this is too bad, especially if you're familiar with the topics. Pay is monthly via PayPal.

How to Apply for Break Studios

If you're still interested, you'll need to apply for a position by filling out an application, choosing your areas of expertise, and submitting a writing resume and writing samples. The samples, however, can be published works (you provide the URL's) or you may upload files. I'd recommend using a sample that corresponds to the type or articles they're looking for to increase your chances of being accepted, but I'm sure any well-written sample will work. You'll also be required to submit a few interesting facts about yourself because according to the website, "the more we know about you, the more assignments we can make available to you."

If any of my readers have experience with this website, please let us know more! The above information is not from personal experience so I'd love to hear if anyone is happy (or unhappy) writing for Break.

I just found your blog and I love it! I applied for Break Studios after reading your post and got my acceptance email in less than a day. Hopefully they end up being a good site to work for.

Break Studios is pretty nice. Their topics are nowhere near as obscure as Demand Studios and the staff is easier to deal with. The do take awhile to proof articles, but they have changed their payments to biweekly which is nice. Also unlike DS, if you send them an email with a question... they actually respond.

Just started with Break Studios and have already selected two articles. Now, I just need to find the time to write them between Suite101, Seed, and Demand Studios.

What a great site. I have been busy doing research on who to write for and thanks to you I have some time to go work out now. :-) Thanks again.

I am a writer for them as well and yes. They do pay $8 per articles. I think that one of these days, I should get back to writing for them and not just at textbroker. I wish that there was no limit on how much you can snatch but unfortunately from another writer on there, she said that you can only grab 10 each.

This is a great blog. I also work for Break Studios. The editors are very nice, telling you exactly what needs to be done to an article that needs to be re-written. And, they do it in such a nice way that you don't feel discouraged about having to do the re-write.

Thanks for providing such great information!
