Residual Income Update and New Projects!

Thursday, November 5, 2009

Well, I'm late again, but I wanted to share my residual income from the past month. I've got a few new projects in the works and I'm scattered all over the place at the moment. Here's how I did in October:

Ehow

Ehow, once again, did not disappoint. I only added 4 new articles in October, and I still made a little less than $250. However, it appears this month is going to be better. I've already made about $10 per day in November and I'm hoping that trend continues. I'm going to try and add more articles this month, but we'll see how it goes.

Bukisa

If you're a regular reader of this blog, you'll know that I don't really write for Bukisa any more since I make much better money elsewhere. However, I did get around to adding two new articles in October and my earnings more than doubled! I went from making about $15 to $18 per month from Bukisa to my highest payment yet - $27.85 in October.

I have about 95 Bukisa referrals, but only a handful of them actually write and only one or two actually make enough money to be an advantage to me. I'm going to be using Bukisa to gain back links for other projects in the future. It never hurts to add to that balance a bit, methinks.

Suite 101

I've been much too neglectful of my Suite 101 account lately. I have a total of 30 articles there and I desperately need to add more. I'm making $30 to $40 per month, on average, and I know if I continue to write the earnings will grow exponentially. If only I had the time for all of these sites! Anyway, Suite still performs very well considering the small number of articles I have posted.

Other Residuals

My Adsense continues to grow each month, although it's actually down for this site. I wonder if it's the new theme? Not as conducive to clicks? I'll have to experiment a bit and see what happens, so expect to see some changes in the future look of The Freelance Home Writer.

Also, I still get clicks almost daily from my InfoBarrel, Xomba and HubPages accounts, so this contributes to my Adsense balance. I'm making on average about $80 per month, but my new projects will hopefully grow this number much more.

New Adventures in Niche Blogging

For the past week, I've been feverishly reading everything I can get my hands on related to niche blogging and I think I'm finally ready to actually try and put some of these techniques into practice. I've started a few more niche blogs and I'm sure I can make them pay in the future. However, I've learned a few things. First, niche blogging is hard, hard, hard work. I have been working night and day on one site that has yet to rank in Google, but hopefully they soon will.

I think this is the reason I failed at my previous attempts. It's a lot of work and commitment. It's so much easier to publish articles on established sites than it is to start your own from scratch. But it's so much more rewarding when you've done it yourself and no one can take it away from you.

So, I'm going to continue on this path while still writing for DS to pay the bills and my residual sites for extra money. I'll be using the residual sites to write articles to promote my niche sites, gaining back links, referral traffic and more money (I hope). I'll update the blog with my progress in next month's residual income update post, and perhaps I'll add some tips and tricks I learn along the way. I'm not an expert niche blogger by any means (more of a novice), but I hope that will soon change!

How was your residual income in October? Have any tips on niche blogging or experience to share? I'd love to hear from you!

Hi Willow,
Thanks for updating us. Regarding your new blog theme, I do think it is less "warm and friendly" than the old theme--just a bit of constructive criticism that might be of use to you!

Hey Willow. I do have some niche blogs, a few with multiple pages at #1. Although I am not raking in the money. I am close to payout but haven't crossed the line.

You are right, niche blogging is ALOT of work. Too much for me sometimes. You have to build all the credibility with google that we coast on at sites like eHow. In fact I tend to procrastinate on my niche stuff by writing at eHow.

The only advice I have is try The Keyword Academy--they may have some resources and contacts that you will find helpful (or not). I have gotten a lot of help with links from their forums.

Also, note that I have 2 posts on back linking for eHow. My earnings have really jumped with that strategy. It's probably something you already do/know, but your readers might find it helpful.

Hi Willow,

Thanks for the updates. Gives us all encouragement to continue adding articles to sites. I personally like your new theme on this blog. It is very clean and neat looking, more professional. Keep up the good work!

I tried my hand at niche blogging, too - it was way too much work for me. I couldn't write 3-5 posts per week for it. So it hasn't made much money. Last I checked, out of about 30 pages, only one of them ranked on page one of Google.

You remind me that I really must write for Suite101 this month! I haven't written anything for them in two months, and it IS a good site for making money. Goal for this month - write articles for Suite101!

Your adsense is probably down because the readers of this blog are too distracted reading good posts :)

I came in at about $114.xx for October myself. I made at least half of that on AC alone. I slacked off of Ehow because of the website glitches making it impossible to publish anything for about a week straight. I took time to redesign both of my blogs in wordpress.

Your section on writing sites that pay upfront is the most definitive I've seen! Keep up the great work!

PS. I would like to add this blog to my link section in both of my my sites if you don't mind.
Let me know!

I accidentally created a niche site, but probably went about it the wrong way. I added a little over 2 posts per month over the past 10 months (as of this writing I have 23 posts).

I watched as the earnings slowly started to grow. In 10 months the blog has earned a little over $200.

Last week's earnings alone were $31.96. I hope the weekly trend continues.

From what I've read everywhere, its best to write a whole lot of content up front, market the site and gain a lot of backlinks. I did just the opposite, but I think it's still paying off.

I guess there's more than one way of setting up a niche site. I just happen to do it the backwards way.

BTW, I love your blog. It's chock full of great information.

@Deanna - I'm glad you like the new theme! I thought it was much cleaner, too. It's not as ad-friendly as the old one, but this site is more a labor of love, I suppose. :)

@Eve Lopez - I know what you mean. It is TONS of work, but I'm hoping it will pay off in the end. I've decided to focus on one site for now, and once it begins making money, then I'll move on to the next one. Until I figure out what I'm doing, I think going slow is best so I don't repeat the same mistakes over and again.

Yes, Suite is a wonderful money maker and I don't know why I haven't written more there. Maybe because it's so much easier to write for eHow. Lol. Well, good luck and I hope you write many more articles!

@John - Thanks! You are more than welcome to link to my blog. I'll be sure to check out your sites when I get a spare moment, as well.

@Felicia - I think it just depends on your strategy. You can go the slow and steady route with a niche blog. That's basically what I did with this one, although I don't really count it as a niche blog because I'm not really targeting any specific keywords or trying to make money - just writing from my heart. However, this blog has made more than any of my niche blogging attempts. I think what really matters is how much effort you put into it in the long run. Congrats on your accidental success!

Oops I missed two comments! Here are my replies (out of order).

@truthseeker - Thanks for the comment! I know the theme is not as friendly as the last one. Lol. But, it was so much work switching it over that it has to stay this way for a while. Lol.

@WriterM - I am definitely thinking about checking out the keyword academy, especially since they have the $1 sign-up going on. I've been thinking about spending some time building more back links for my eHow articles as well. It's a strategy that I know works, and I'll be sure to check out your post also. :)
