Residual Income Update - Surpassed $100 in Ehow Earnings

Friday, May 1, 2009

It's the first of May and time to evaluate last month's residual income earnings. I'm proud to report that I reached over $100 on eHow in my third month! Things are moving along nicely there, and I can't wait to see what next month brings.

I added 22 new articles in April, so it's not like I was breaking my back or anything. I have a total of 103 articles and I made $106.39. I think that's pretty darn good, considering most articles took me about 15-20 minutes to write. My goal for next month is $125 and I plan to add 20-25 new articles. (I like to set the bar low so I can be pleasantly surprised if I make more.)

I definitely won't be leaving eHow anytime soon. I know people are upset about the article sweeps, but I was not affected. I just kept writing through the storm, and it has paid off. See what you can accomplish writing just 20-25 short how-to articles per month for eHow?

The Low Down on Bukisa

I am removing my Bukisa earnings from the side bar, and pretty much leaving Bukisa in the dust. In my short residual income experience, sites that pay based on ad-click result in a much higher payment than those that pay by page view. I haven't submitted anything to Bukisa in quite some time but here's an example of what I mean:

  • Article A published on eHow has 360 views. Revenue: $19.16
  • Article B published on Bukisa has 1786 views. Revenue: $6.39
My total revenue for April on Bukisa was $16.88, and a portion of this is from my referrals. Not great! Granted, I only have 29 articles there, but Bukisa's just not as profitable as other sites, and I can't waste anymore time there.

I've made a total of $42.93 there in 3 months, whereas I've made a total of $179.03 in three months on ehow. However, I've put a lot less effort into Bukisa, I'll admit.

Other Residual Income Projects

I've decided to focus my efforts on two residual income sites for the remainder of the year - eHow and Suite101. (See my post on Suite 101 for more information.) Both of these sites have a similar revenue share model, and they both have HUGE potential, much more than Bukisa and other pay by page view sites.

I've only just begun writing for Suite 101 in the last week of April. I have 11 articles up and have made less than $5.00 but more than $3.00. The terms of service prohibit me from publishing exactly how much I make. However, I've already made more there than I did my first week of eHow, so things are looking up. I've also heard many people remark on their earnings at Suite surpassing their eHow earnings. I hope I'll be one of them soon enough!

Conclusion

I've been doing very well with my residual income earnings, and have passed my goals each month since I've begun. It's a slow process, but I'm getting there. I hope to be making at least $1000 per month in residuals by the end of the year. The key is patience and determination. Don't give up in the beginning when it looks like you're making peanuts. It WILL add-up and things WILL take off. Just keep at it and you can reach your goals before you know it.

How was your month? Any breakthroughs? New projects? I want to hear from you!

Wow, that's inspiring!!! I may have to crank up the eHow articles!

I've been gunning a little bit harder for traditional markets this month, and it has paid off in a couple nice clips, but financially web writing is WAY better for the time spent. So far, at least. :-)

Hey Willow, congrats on your first $100! How does eHow actually pay you? Do they pay you per article, per 1,000 views, etc. Curious to hear more about your success with them.

Also, (shameless plug approaching) have you ever tried HubPages? If you have, I'd love to hear your thoughts on us and if you haven't, I'd really like to have you give us a shot.

Email me when you get a chance and I can give you any other details that you need.

Thanks and have a great weekend!

Hi, Ryan!

In answer to your first question, eHow pays a portion of the revenue generated by ad clicks. It's similar to HubPages, only eHow pays you directly instead of being paid through your personal Adsense account. Also, we have no idea how much of the ad revenue we are paid as eHow keeps their algorithm a secret. However, I've made more money here than any other residual income site, so I don't mind much. :)

As for HubPages, I have a couple articles there, and have made more in Adsense revenue than on my numerous Xomblurbs. I love how easy the site is to use, and I love the various revenue streams you can generate.

I haven't had much time to devote to creating Hubs so I can't say how profitable it would be for me in the long run. It's actually a future project I have planned but I just haven't gotten around to it. I'm also planning an in-depth blog post featuring HubPages in the near future.

Thanks for stopping by!

Hey, excellent work! I Have been doing this project, too, tho not at the rate you are. I write 6 articles last month, which have made about $2.50 so far, but my question is this: I have maybe 2 articles bringing in all the money, but with few hits, and while the rest have high page views, they haven't earned a single cent yet. It strikes me as odd, and I wonder when you do when you have an article with high page views that isn't earning at all...

Best,
Teresa

Great inspiration!! I just registered at eHow. You've provided such great information on writing these articles and it's time I put this to use!

Neat, thanks for the info, appreciated greatly!

Teresa - Sometimes there's not much you can do if an article fails. However, I would suggest taking steps to improve the ad alignment (Check out the post here: http://freelancehomewriter.blogspot.com/2009/04/how-to-improve-ad-alignment-on-ehow.html).

If you are getting many page views, it's most likely that you don't have relevant ads displaying. Good luck!

Michael - Good luck to you, also. I know you'll love writing for eHOw once you start!

Rachelle - No problem! Thanks for stopping by! :)

Hey- congrats on your ehow month, and good luck at Suite101- I make FIVE TIMES the income from Suite compared to ehow, with roughly the same amount of articles.

Hey Willow,

Congrats. I wanted to thank you for all you do. Although I'm not quite where you are yet, I have seen a major increase in eHow earnings ever since I started following some of your advice.

Previously I had purchased the infamous eBook - while it was well written with good advice, I just didn't find it nearly as helpful or detailed as your advice.

Thank you very much.

Liz

@That Lady - I can already tell that I'm going to make more with Suite. I made more there in my first two weeks than I did on eHow in my first month, and with less articles! I love it so far, and thanks for the encouragement!

@LizD - I'm so glad that I could help out. It definitely makes maintaining this blog worth it. :)

Hi Willow Sidhe
Really great information. Going through this info I just want to know whether this writing article in eHow is only for residents of US. I am from India. Am I eligible to submit articles to eHow. Please clarify.

Willow Sidhe said...

HI, sirijotha. At this time, you can submit articles to eHow but you will not be paid for them. I'm sorry! I don't know if eHow will ever pay international writers, but right now they will not.

If you look around, you may be able to find other residual income sites for international writers, such as AC and Suite101. Good luck!

You have given me a new goal - make more in residual income and worry less about selling per article - well, except for Demand Studios. I have an e-How account but have yet to write there, so I think it's time to delve into it. Thanks for all the great info.

Hi again, Write Moms! I'm glad I have inspired you and I can't recommend eHow highly enough. It's a great way to make residual income. It's so easy and the money is very good, better than any other residual site out there aside from Suite 101. Good luck there, and let me know if I can ever do anything to help you out!
